Harry Potter Comes of Age: The Social Politics of the Monstrous in (Post)Modern Fantasy
(3-week)
Roger Adkins

2012 course pending approval

For a generation, Harry Potter mania has prevailed, breathing new life into the most Romantic tendancies in our cultural heritage. One of the reasons why the Harry Potter series may in fact be so popular worldwide is that it stays true to one of the most important functions of fantasy literature: it provides an imaginary world that is particularly well-suited to offer up commentary on the 'real' world. In this course you will ride the HP mania but will utilise the occasion to think critically about how it is we might be able to imagine for ourselves a very different world - one that unseats the seemingly mundane and turns the worst aspects of 'normal' on their heads...
